Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) effective at reducing pain, fever and inflammation. It is generally considered safer than similar NSAIDs, such as aspirin, as it tends to produce fewer and milder side effects.

The medication is very widely used around the world, though most people buy ibuprofen under one of its many brand names, including Advil, Motrin, Brufen, Nurofen and many others. In most places patients can easily buy Ibuprofen as a generic as well.

A prescription is typically not needed to buy Ibuprofen by itself, though it is sometimes mixed with other medications---such as codeine---which may require a prescription or pharmacist approval. Likewise very high doses may require a prescription. Ibuprofen on its own is usually inexpensive, similar to aspirin.

A Safer Solution for Pain, Inflammation and Fever

Ibuprofen is most widely used in tablet form, though other formulations do exist, including gels, oral solutions, IV solutions and chewable tablets. The medication is typically used as-needed, though the need may extend for several days. People commonly buy ibuprofen to treat:

  • Muscle aches or sprains
  • Arthritis
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Headaches, including migraines
  • Toothache
  • Post-surgical pain
  • Back pain
  • Fever
  • Other mild to moderate pain, inflammation or fever

Like most painkillers and anti-inflammatory treatments, the medication works best if taken at the earliest symptoms of pain or inflammation.

The amount of ibuprofen taken depends on the condition being treated and its severity:

  • For fever and mild pain, 200 to 400 mg taken every 4 to 6 hours is usually sufficient.
  • For inflammatory conditions and moderate pain, 400 to 800 mg should be taken every 6 hours as needed.
  • Never exceed 800 mg in a single dose, or 3200 mg per day (that's 4 doses of 800 mg) without explicit doctor approval.

Effects are typically noticed within 15 to 30 minutes of administration, and peak after about one hour. Effects begin to wear off after 4 to 6 hours, depending on the dosage taken and individual response.

Despite being a widely-available over-the-counter treatment, ibuprofen is very effective at reducing pain, fever and inflammation for most patients. In fact 800 mg tablets of ibuprofen are commonly prescribed following surgical or dental procedures to manage pain and inflammation---without the potentially severe side effects associated with alternatives such as steroids or narcotics.

Warnings & Side Effects

Like all NSAIDs, there is a risk of side effects with ibuprofen use; however, this risk is generally smaller---though not non-existent---with ibuprofen than with similar products, such as aspirin or naproxen. Possible side effects from any NSAID include:

  • Nausea
  • Indigestion
  • Bleeding in the stomach or intestines
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Headache
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Rash
  • Elevated levels of potassium
  • Tinnitus (ringing in ears)

The odds of experiencing side effects are increased with the frequency of use; side effects are extremely unlikely with sporadic, occasional use. If using ibuprofen long-term to treat a chronic condition, such as arthritis, regular doctor exams are strongly encouraged to monitor for developing adverse effects.

There is some evidence that NSAID use (excluding low doses of aspirin) increase risk of heart attack and stroke. Patients with a history of these conditions are generally advised to avoid NSAID use other than low-dose aspirin.
